Clearly, the Stamps will lose some familiar faces, and they’ll be looking for free-agent help — particularly, I believe, at the receiver spot. They had a veteran core, but outside of Lewis and his 93 catches, that core didn’t deliver enough consistently.
In fact, if there’s any area that Hufnagel rates some criticism this year, it’s in his faith in a veteran group on offence that included Burris, Reynolds, Rambo, Romby Bryant and Lewis that it had another big year left in it. He rolled the dice and lost.
But the upside is that their struggles forced him to start the inevitable rebuild a year before he might have thought necessary. The emergence of Drew Tate, Jon Cornish and Landan Talley were signs that there shouldn’t be a significant dropoff, if any, from what the veteran core provided.
